Joanna Penn, NY Times bestselling author, maintains the blog The Creative Penn, where she offers a variety of resources for aspiring writers.  Penn self-published her first book in 2008, an experience about which she stated that she “didn’t sell any books because no one knew who [she] was”.

As a result Penn decided to become more educated about marketing and began her blog with the hope of helping others avoid the costly mistakes that she had made in those early years.

Beyond learning about marketing, Penn decided to improve her writing and joined the 2009 challenge of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).  About participating in NaNoWriMo, Penn had the following to say:

I joined National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2009. 20,000 words later, I had a nugget of an idea that blossomed into my first novel.

See?  NaNoWriMo has its benefits!  So, you should think about joining the 2014 challenge in November!

Since 2011, Penn has published several novels (under the name J.F. Penn) and nonfiction books.  She regularly updates her blog and shares interviews with fellow authors as well as others within the publishing/writing industry.

The video below is her interview with fellow thriller and bestselling author Zoe Sharp, discussing her process of finding voice, writing a series and being a hybrid author.
